Students, staff, and community members lined the campus walkways to show their support for military-connected children. The parade brought together both schools in a celebration of pride, gratitude, and community as students cheered and recognized the important role military families play in our community.
Leading the parade was the THS Coast Guard JROTC, whose cadets marched with pride and helped set the tone for a meaningful and inspiring event. Their leadership helped highlight the strong connection between our schools and the military community that supports and protects our nation.
Surf City Schools extends a special thank you to Master Chief Brown and the Coast Guard JROTC for their leadership and partnership in honoring our military-connected students. Their presence helped make the event memorable and meaningful for everyone involved.
April’s Month of the Military Child serves as an opportunity for schools and communities to recognize the unique challenges military children face—from frequent moves to long deployments of loved ones—while celebrating their resilience, adaptability, and strength.
Throughout the month, Surf City Elementary and Surf City Middle School will continue to recognize and celebrate military-connected students through special activities and schoolwide events. These efforts reflect the schools’ ongoing commitment to supporting military families and ensuring every student feels seen, valued, and celebrated.
The kickoff parade was a powerful reminder that the Surf City school community stands proudly behind its military children—not just in April, but every day of the year.

Dahlia is an 8th grader at Surf City Middle School, recognized for her academics, leadership, kindness, and artistic talent.
Dahlia stays involved in several areas at school. She is a member of the National Junior Honor Society and Student Council, and she is already earning high school credits. She also participates in the school band and has been part of the talent show, where she earned first place in 2025 for music.
Outside of the classroom, Dahlia is active in her community. She volunteers as a youth minister at Emma Anderson and helps at the Surf City Community Garden. She also plays volleyball through Parks and Recreation and has been recognized for her artwork, including earning awards in the Surf City Middle School art contest.
Dahlia often encourages other students to explore music, especially guitar and vocals, and she serves as a positive example for younger and new students.
In her free time, she enjoys music 🎸, painting 🎨, volleyball 🏐, skateboarding 🛹, baking 🍪, and working on fashion projects. Her favorite food is pasta 🍝, and her favorite color is maroon. She has a Great Dane named Sylvie 🐶.
One interesting note—many of Dahlia’s skills, including guitar, painting, skateboarding, and baking, are self-taught.
❤️ Thank you, Dahlia, for your involvement and contributions at Surf City Middle School.

This important step in the NC Career Development Plan helps students begin thinking about their goals and the pathways to achieve them. A big thank you to SCMS counselor Ms. Smith and seventh-grade social studies teachers Ms. Donahue, Mr. Scott, and Mr. Hinman for helping facilitate this experience.
Be sure to ask your student about their interests—you might be surprised by what they discover! ✨

Thank you to our band directors for the work they are doing each day to support students and grow music programs across PCS. 🎺🥁🎼

A big congratulations to the students from Cape Fear Middle, Surf City Middle, Heide Trask High, Pender High, and Topsail High who participated in Honor Band at UNC Pembroke this past weekend.
Students from across the state performed on Saturday at the Givens Performing Arts Center after spending just one day working with guest clinicians to prepare the concert. That is no small task, and our students did an outstanding job. We are proud to see them recognized for their talent and commitment.

She creates a caring and structured environment where students feel valued, supported, and encouraged to grow. Mrs. Clarke is deeply committed to ensuring all students have access to success, and she consistently goes above and beyond to provide the academic and emotional support they need.
Her positive influence reaches far beyond the classroom, as she builds meaningful relationships and helps students gain confidence in themselves every day. We are grateful for her passion, her heart for students, and the difference she is making at SCM.
Congratulations, Mrs. Clarke! 🦈💙
