Jones 2 performed well this weekend!!! We came in 1st place! Robotics competition is a team sport. After all the qualifying rounds are played, the teams have an old school playground selection process. There were 28 teams at the event at UNC Asehville, so some teams don't get selected to compete in the championship tournament. Our robot "Jones 2" competed well, but is being modified to perform even better for the next tournament which is this coming weekend in Raleigh. Here are some pics from the event. Please join us in congratulating our Robotics team!! Shout out to Mr. Henry's for his support and dedication to the team. We are so proud of our Pirates!

Please congratulate our students for their performance in the UNCW High School Mathematics competition! As a team, we won 2nd place in first division (beating Ashley High School)! We also had two individuals who placed in the top ten students for the division: Max Herrin in 4th place, and James Wei in 5th place. We will soon find out how many qualified for the state competition in April. Thank you to Ms. Stone and Ms. Papke for supporting our students! We are so proud of our Topsail Pirates!

We love sharing pictures of our hardworking THS Band! They participated in an instrumental recording soundtrack session at Walt Disney World over Spring Break. Students recorded numerous soundtracks to Disney favorites including Lion King and Tarzan. Students also enjoyed EPCOT, Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, and Hollywood Studios. Huge shout out to Mr. Wentzek and Mr. Judy for all the planning, preparation, and time they put into our Band program to make wonderful experiences like this happen for our students. We value you both and our THS band tremendously! GO PIRATES!

Ms. Umbaugh's class is another winner for our Black History Month door decorating contest! She shared their class experience below:
"When the door decoration contest was announced, we were studying the exploration of the deepest parts of the ocean in Oceanography class. We decided to study Dr. Dawn Wright who is the first African American to go to the Challenger Deep (deepest part of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean.) We watched videos and read articles about her and her accomplishments and then the students creatively displayed information about her.
When we found out yesterday that we had won the door decoration contest, we sent an email to Dr. Wright to let her know. She responded saying she was stunned and "deeply" honored! I am including the response I received from her today.
Dear Mrs. Umbaugh,
I am absolutely stunned! What an amazing thing you and your students have done and I’ve never felt so honored. This is certainly the very, very best ending to Black History Month for me that I could have imagined. Please extend my deepest thanks to your students for me (pun intended 😉).Thank you so much again and congratulations to you and your students for their first prize! Best wishes for their continued success.
Dr. Wright"
Way to go to our winners! We are thoroughly impressed with the "depth" this class went to in decorating, as well as, reaching out to Dr. Wright.

Shout out to Ms. Bachman's 2nd Period class for winning the Black History Month Trivia Game yesterday!! Mr. Clark brought the class doughnuts as a reward. Here is a photo to share their victory!
