FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FROM THE DESK OF DR. LARRY OBEDA
THS PRINCIPAL
*****
June 13, 2024
Topsail High School will hold ceremonies this summer to officially rename two locations within the school to honor two people who have made the school what it is today. The Pender County Board of Education has approved requests to rename the school’s media center in honor of benefactor Jan Lewis and the school’s gymnasium will be renamed in honor of teacher and coach Jamie Rochelle.
“Jan Lewis Media Center” Ceremony at 5pm on Thursday, June 20, 2024
Mrs. Lewis was integral to the success of Topsail High School, donating several million dollars to the school over several years. Her funds were used for upgrades to the school’s stadium and track, band uniforms, computers, and other programs. Her donations also covered six teacher salaries during a time of financial hardship for the district.
“The additional teaching positions allowed Topsail High the opportunity to offer courses that allowed students to be more competitive when applying for college and scholarships,” Principal Dr. Larry Obeda said. “Simply put, her contributions made Topsail High School what it is today.”
A plaque will be unveiled during the ceremony, along with new signage in the building.
“Coach Jamie Rochelle Gymnasium” Ceremony at 5pm on Monday, July 8, 2024
The THS Student Council passed a resolution in the spring to rename the Topsail High School Gymnasium into the “Coach Jamie Rochelle Gymnasium” in honor of late teacher and coach James “Jamie” Rochelle, who passed away unexpectedly in June 2023.
After graduating from Topsail High, Rochelle returned to his alma mater for 15 years as a Physical Education Teacher and was the Head Men’s Golf Coach at the time of his passing. In his years at THS, he was also a coach for football, basketball, taught driver’s education, and was always involved in several other extracurricular activities.
“Coach Rochelle has three children (two of whom are currently enrolled at THS), but he had a fatherly presence in many students’ lives,” Student Council Vice President Peyton Schlossnagle wrote in a letter addressed to the BOE to accompany the request. “This remembrance would serve as a deserved recollection of Coach Rochelle’s impact on his students.”
A plaque will be placed in the gymnasium, and signs will be built and hung outside the building by the THS Carpentry classes.
All members of the community are invited to attend both ceremonies.
