Ms. Morin's students are exploring their career interests by working their way through their top four career clusters. Each "center" has a notebook of engaging information, a To Do list, and several tasks related to those careers. All materials are in a box and students work in pairs to accomplish the tasks. In the process, they learn more about the careers like what high school courses align, working conditions, and more. They have the opportunity to complete a small project related to that career as well. Thanks for all your hard work preparing these centers Ms. Morin!

Sportsmanship is the foundation of education-based athletics. PCS middle and high schools emphasize sportsmanship in all programs and at all contests.
Congratulations to our basketball and cheer sportsmanship award winners. The boys' and girls' basketball teams from Surf City Middle were selected, and the cheer squads from West Pender and Cape Fear Middle also received recognition for this season. Teams are nominated by their peers based on the criteria below.
-Coaches, athletic director, and administrators provide a welcoming environment for visiting teams, officials, and fans.
-Coaches serve as role models for their student-athletes and parents, displaying respect for players, opponents, and officials.
-Players compete with integrity, perseverance, and a sense of fair play.
-Parents demonstrate respect for all players, coaches, officials, parents, and fans.
-A team must be ejection-free for the season and must participate in the nomination process to qualify.

Our 6th and 7th grade students were visited by the Raleigh Rockers today, a break dance group from Raleigh, North Carolina. The students enjoyed watching them break dance, were able to learn a dance routine, and play a game of dancing musical chairs. The teachers even battled it out in a dance off. A big thank you to the Grassroots Grant which made this possible!!!

Recently the Cape Fear Middle robotics teams traveled to Durham for a regional skills competition, going head-to-head with teams that have been competing for years. While they didn’t place this time, one of the CFM teams brought home the 🏆 Sportsmanship Award—a huge honor that showcases their teamwork and dedication!
Coach Paul Odom is incredibly proud of these students, many of whom just started competing this year. This experience gave them valuable lessons and new ideas to improve their robots, setting their sights on a potential shot at the state competition later this year! 🚀

This week in STEM we have been busy. 8th grade has begun testing out their balsa wood gliders with the goal of making them fly farther and stay in the air longer each time they test them. 7th grade is finishing up their rubber band airplanes so they can test them out next week. And last but certainly not least our 6th grade students are putting the finishing touches on their tetrahedral kits so they can try and fly them next week!

Congratulations to Ms. Van Slyke for being recognized as the Cape Fear Middle BT1 Teacher of Promise/School-level BT of the Year! You are so deserving of this award. You started later in the school year as an EC Teacher, but you JUMPED RIGHT IN! You bring such a warm and positive energy to the school, are doing push-in support, pull-out learning labs, you have worked diligently to build relationships with students and teammates, working hard to navigate EC paperwork, and you are willing to ask for help when needed and apply suggested tips/strategies. You are a true shining light!
