Superintendent of Schools

Pender County, North Carolina

The Pender County Board of Education is seeking a Superintendent to lead Pender County Schools (PCS).  Candidates must have or be qualified to hold a Superintendent license in North Carolina.  Prior experience and a doctoral degree are preferred but not required.  The individual chosen will be required to live in Pender County.

 Candidates should demonstrate a strong ability in: 1) instructional and administrative leadership; 2) partnering with community members, school personnel and government officials; 3) public relations; 4) administration and organization; 5) long and short term planning; 6) budgeting; 7) personnel management and staff development; 8) facility management; and 9) community involvement.

 Pender County Schools Board and administrative offices are located in Burgaw, North Carolina. Some other towns in Pender County include Hampstead (the “Seafood Capital of the Carolinas”), Surf City, and Topsail Beach – all island towns where you will find seafood vendors; great restaurants; and easy access to water for boating, swimming, surfing, and fishing. No visit to Pender County is official without a stop in Rocky Point for perhaps the most famous hot dogs in North Carolina. Other areas of Pender County have been highlighted in both film and television productions for their serenity. A farmhouse in Secret Life of Bees continues to draw fans to Watha. Television shows One Tree Hill and Welcome to Flatch have used Pender County as a quaint backdrop to paint a picture of a less hectic life. Pender County also has an array of artists who are featured in local shops, arts festivals and celebrations in various locations.  Other amenities in the county include a winery, blueberry farms, and other great local produce grown throughout the county and plentiful during much of the year.  The climate in Pender County makes it an outstanding location for year-round family or individual activities, including access to many golf courses in surrounding counties, historical sites, and a variety of local festivals and celebrations.  

 The county has an estimated population of 63,000 and operates a public school system with approximately 10,500+ racially diverse students in 18 schools.  Of those schools, 4 are high schools (one of which is a National Blue Ribbon Award winning Early College program), 5 are middle/intermediate schools, and 9 are elementary schools.  PCS also has a fee-based after-school program (PACES) serving students in grades Pre-K-5 in the district at 4 elementary schools.  More than 90% of the district’s teachers have 3 or more years of experience, and more than 94% are certified.  PCS is one of the largest employers in Pender County.  

 PCS places great focus on continuing to develop and implement programs for strong academic performance and professional development and leadership for teachers and staff.  The Board is searching for a Superintendent who will continue this work to improve and increase its programs and initiatives for academic achievement and excellence and to increase teacher and staff academic and leadership skills.
