Pender County Schools Superintendent Dr. Brad Breedlove has been named the 2027 Southeast Region Superintendent of the Year and is one of eight regional winners who will compete for the Burroughs Wellcome Fund 2027 A. Craig Phillips North Carolina Superintendent of the Year Award.
Dr. Breedlove represents Region 2 — Southeast and is one of eight regional winners who will compete for the Burroughs Wellcome Fund 2027 A. Craig Phillips North Carolina Superintendent of the Year Award.
The statewide award is presented by the North Carolina Association of School Administrators and the North Carolina School Superintendents’ Association, with support from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund and Scholastic Education. It recognizes a superintendent for outstanding leadership and service to public education.
“This is a great honor for Dr. Breedlove and for Pender County Schools,” Board of Education Chair Don Hall said. “Dr. Breedlove works hard, he cares about our students and staff, and he wants to see this school system get better every day. We’re glad to have him leading our district.”
Dr. Breedlove said the regional recognition reflects the work taking place throughout Pender County Schools.
“I’m honored to represent Pender County Schools and the Southeast region,” Dr. Breedlove said. “This recognition is really about our students, teachers, staff, administrators, families and community. We have a lot of people working every day to give our students the opportunities they deserve, and I’m grateful to be part of that work.”
Dr. Breedlove joins seven other regional winners representing school districts across North Carolina. The 2027 A. Craig Phillips North Carolina Superintendent of the Year will be announced Oct. 8 during a ceremony at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro.
The award is named for A. Craig Phillips, who served as North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction from 1969 to 1989.
The Oct. 8 announcement will also be livestreamed on the NCASA YouTube channel beginning at 11:30 a.m.
The superintendent selected for the statewide honor will represent North Carolina in consideration for the 2027 National Superintendent of the Year Award, which will be presented during the American Association of School Administrators’ National Conference on Education in February 2027 in Atlanta.
