HAMPSTEAD, N.C. — South Topsail Elementary School has returned to normal operations following additional cleaning and indoor air quality testing.
A classroom had been temporarily closed while additional cleaning and corrective work were completed. Students and staff used another space in the school while that work was underway.
A third-party environmental company returned to the school on Friday, August 28, to evaluate the classroom. The assessment included a visual inspection, moisture readings and air quality testing.
The report found no visible signs of suspected fungal growth or elevated moisture in the accessible areas of the classroom. Temperature and humidity readings were also within recommended guidelines.
Air testing showed that fungal concentrations inside the classroom were lower than the outdoor samples collected for comparison. The types of spores found inside were also similar to those found outdoors.
Based on the results and review by the environmental professionals working with the district, the classroom has been cleared and reopened. Students and staff have returned to their regular space, and the school is operating as normal.
