Topsail High School student Gabe Schwery has turned three years of construction coursework and hands-on experience into a pre-apprenticeship opportunity with Monteith Construction.
Gabe began the construction pathway by enrolling in Core and Sustainable Construction at Topsail High. He also joined Pender County Schools’ first SHED team, which gave him additional opportunities to apply what he was learning in class and develop practical construction skills.
He continued through all three years of the construction program. Along the way, Gabe showed that he was dependable, willing to learn and ready to take on new responsibilities. His work in the classroom and on construction projects helped prepare him for an opportunity beyond high school.
Monteith Construction recognized Gabe’s preparation and offered him a pre-apprenticeship position. The opportunity will allow him to continue developing his skills while gaining experience alongside professionals in the construction industry.
Pender County Schools is working with Monteith Construction and Cape Fear Community College to finalize the program and register the apprenticeship through ApprenticeshipNC. The partnership connects high school coursework with additional education, industry training and employment experience.
Several people and organizations helped Gabe reach this point. Mr. English provided instruction and mentorship throughout the construction program. Career Development Coordinator Mrs. Fargo Howe helped make the connections that led to the opportunity with Monteith Construction.
Connect for Success NC has also supported Gabe during the process. Pender County Schools appreciates the involvement of Monteith Construction, Cape Fear Community College and ApprenticeshipNC in helping create a clear next step for him.
Gabe’s experience shows how Career and Technical Education courses can help students explore an interest, build job-related skills and begin preparing for a career while they are still in high school.
