After completing 20 years of teaching at Pender High School, Mr. Tom Herren has earned one of the highest honors available through the North Carolina FFA Association, the Honorary State FFA Degree.
The Honorary State Degree is the highest recognition the North Carolina FFA Association can bestow upon an individual who has made significant contributions to agricultural education and the success of FFA members. Mr. Herren’s dedication to students, agriculture, and the FFA organization makes him exceptionally deserving of this prestigious honor.
Throughout his two decades at Pender High School, Mr. Herren has consistently provided students with opportunities to grow through agricultural education and leadership development. Year after year, he has guided students as they competed successfully at both regional and state FFA events, helping them develop skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
Mr. Herren has also worked tirelessly to strengthen the agricultural education program through grant opportunities. Over the years, he has secured several Program Area Improvement Grants to enhance student learning experiences. Most notably, in 2024, he received funding that helped establish an on-campus farm at Pender High School. This project has created invaluable hands-on learning opportunities for students and will continue to expand for years to come, leaving a lasting impact on the school and community.
Beyond his work at Pender High, Mr. Herren is deeply committed to agricultural education and youth development. He serves as a mentor through the local 4-H program, helping students learn proper dairy cattle handling and management skills. His passion for agriculture extends to his own involvement in the dairy industry, where he participates in dairy cattle breeding competitions in Ohio.
Mr. Herren maintains livestock on his family farm in Ohio and makes trips home each year to continue the farming traditions that have helped shape his lifelong commitment to agriculture.
For generations of students, Mr. Herren has been more than a teacher — he has been a mentor, advocate, and role model. His dedication to agricultural education, student success, and the FFA organization has left a lasting mark on Pender High School and the surrounding community.
Pender High School congratulates Mr. Herren on receiving the North Carolina FFA Honorary State Degree. This well-deserved recognition honors his years of service, leadership, and commitment to agricultural education.
