Pender County Schools has received questions about why the district requested a $4 million increase in current-expense funding for the 2026-2027 fiscal year.

That request was not designed to add new programs or major expansions. It was identified as the amount needed to maintain current staffing levels and services for the upcoming school year.

Each year, the cost of maintaining the same level of service increases. Current-expense funding supports recurring school needs such as staffing, instructional support, student services, school operations, utilities, transportation operations, and other day-to-day costs.

The district’s budget presentation separated the cost to maintain services from additional priorities that would advance services. The $4 million current-expense increase was the amount identified to maintain existing services before any additional investments were added.

PCS received a $1.3 million increase in current-expense funding. While appreciated, that amount is $2.7 million below the base level requested.

District and school leadership will now review the budget carefully and determine what can be funded, delayed, reduced, or addressed through other available resources.

The district’s priority remains protecting students and classrooms. That means classroom instruction, school safety, and the core operations necessary to serve students will remain at the center of the decision-making process.
