The Topsail High School Marching Pirates are preparing to take their talents across the Atlantic after being invited to perform in the 42nd Annual London New Year’s Day Parade on January 1, 2028.
The invitation marks a milestone moment for Topsail High School, and Pender County Schools, as the Marching Pirates will have the opportunity to represent their school community on an international stage.
“We are incredibly honored and excited for our students to receive this invitation,” said Jake Wentzek, Director of Bands at Topsail High School. “To be selected for an event of this magnitude reflects the hard work, dedication, and pride our students bring to this program every day. What makes it even more special is that the original nomination happened without anyone in the band knowing, so this came as a true and unforgettable surprise.”
The London New Year’s Day Parade, now known as The London Parade, began in 1987 as the Lord Mayor of Westminster’s Big Parade and has grown into one of the world’s most recognizable New Year’s Day celebrations. The parade takes place through central London and traditionally features thousands of performers, including marching bands, dancers, cultural groups, floats, and entertainers from around the world.
“This is an extraordinary honor for Topsail High School,” said Dr. Michael Sasscer, Principal of Topsail High School. “Being invited to perform in London is a testament to our students, Mr. Wentzek’s leadership, and the families and supporters who make this program so strong.”
Wentzek credited the support of school and district leadership, as well as the Topsail Music Boosters, for helping make the opportunity possible.
“This type of experience can change the way students see themselves and the world,” Wentzek said. “Music education opens doors, builds confidence, and creates moments students will carry for the rest of their lives. We are grateful to Dr. Sasscer, Dr. Breedlove, Dr. Taylor, and our Music Boosters organization for believing in this program and supporting our students every step of the way.”
The Topsail Music Boosters have provided continued financial support throughout the process, helping the band move closer to making the international trip a reality.
Dr. Brad Breedlove, Superintendent of Pender County Schools, said the invitation is a proud moment for the entire district.
“This is exactly the kind of opportunity that shows the power of public education and the arts,” Breedlove said. “The Topsail High School Marching Pirates will not only represent their school, but all of Pender County Schools and North Carolina. We are proud of these students and excited for the world to see their talent, dedication, and Pirate pride.”
More information about fundraising efforts, travel plans, and community support opportunities will be shared as the Marching Pirates continue preparing for their historic performance in London.
