Walk to Read Camp returns in 2026 with an exciting new chapter for eligible students! Under the leadership of Dr. Oates, Director of Elementary Education, and Meagan Winstead, Early Literacy Specialist, the camp continues to grow into a dynamic, engaging experience where students imagine, explore, and discover their path to excellence.
🌟 A Literacy Experience Built on Exploration
Centered on curiosity and discovery, Walk to Read immerses students in literacy through:
High-quality texts
Creative art experiences
Project-based learning
Hands-on activities that bring reading to life
Our mission is simple but powerful: Imagine, explore, and discover while mapping the path to excellence. Through meaningful learning experiences, students build confidence, deepen comprehension, and develop a love of reading that lasts.
🌊 New for 2026: Virtual Field Trip Experiences
This year, students will extend their learning beyond the classroom with interactive, grade-level virtual field trips designed to deepen comprehension and build background knowledge.
Rising 3rd Grade – Sea Turtle Conservation
Students will take a virtual trip to a Sea Turtle Hospital, exploring real-world conservation efforts while making connections to literacy learning.
Rising 4th Grade – Amazing Adaptations
Students will explore how animals survive and thrive in different environments, blending science concepts with informational reading.
🐾 New for 2026: PAWS for Reading – Meet Ziggy!
We’re excited to introduce Ziggy the Therapy Dog as a new addition to Walk to Read Camp! Ziggy (or another certified therapy dog) will visit each Walk to Read site to share a story with students.
Each class will enjoy:
A special read-aloud
Time to meet Ziggy in the media center
Opportunities to pet or greet the dog
These visits help build confidence, joy, and positive connections to reading.
💙 More Than a Summer Program
Across the district, students arrive each day energized and excited to learn—and families continue to notice the impact. Walk to Read Camp is more than a summer program; it’s a celebration of learning, a boost to literacy confidence, and a spark for lifelong readers.
Families of students eligible to attend Walk to Read Camp will be notified soon with additional details, including camp dates.
