Pender County Schools is partnering once again with the Pender County Health Department to provide flu shots for students this fall. This initiative will be available to middle and high school students across the district, with vaccines administered by health department nurses.
To participate, students must be eligible to receive the flu vaccine and have written parental consent. For children without insurance, state-supplied vaccine will be available at no cost.
Why the Flu Shot Matters
The flu is highly contagious and can be especially serious for children, often causing fever, headache, body aches, and extreme fatigue. Illness can last a week or more, keeping students out of school and childcare during that time. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends annual flu vaccination for all children as the best way to prevent infection and reduce the spread to classmates.
“Our goal for this initiative is simple—keep students healthy and learning in the classroom,” said Cynthia Avery, Lead Nurse for Pender County Schools. “By making flu shots accessible at school, we hope to prevent illness and protect families across the community.”
