SparkNC Lab at Heide Trask High School

ROCKY POINT, NC - Pender County Schools celebrated the grand opening of a SparkNC Lab today at Heide Trask High School, marking an exciting step forward in preparing students for careers in technology.

The SparkNC program is a statewide initiative that gives students the chance to learn at their own pace in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, software development, and game design. With access to the same industry tools used by professionals, students will be able to explore, experiment, and develop valuable real-world skills.

Craig Lawson, PCS Director of Digital Learning and Media, said the lab is designed to spark curiosity. “This is a place where students can come to do the things they want to do, not just what they feel they have to do,” Lawson said. “It’s about creating space for exploration, challenge, and growth.”

Sophomore Scarlet Dickson said the Spark Lab will have a big impact on her and her classmates. “There are so many opportunities here,” Dickson said. “I love that you can go down one pathway, and if it’s not for you, you can turn around and try another. It really gives you the chance to figure out what excites you.”

Superintendent Dr. Brad Breedlove said the new lab shows the district’s commitment to forward-looking education. “The SparkNC Lab is about preparing our students for the jobs of tomorrow,” Breedlove said. “We’re proud that Heide Trask High School is leading the way in bringing this innovative opportunity to Pender County.”

Although the SparkNC Lab is located at Heide Trask, it is available to all PCS students. Those interested can connect with their school’s administration or counselor to learn how to access the lab.
