Surf City Elementary is proud to welcome Ms. Karla Smith as our new Principal for the 2025-2026 school year!
Ms. Smith brings 31 years of experience in education to Pender County Schools, having served as both a teacher and an administrator. A proud graduate of East Carolina University, she holds a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education as well as School Administration.
After 16 years in the classroom, Ms. Smith spent the next 15 years as an elementary school administrator, most recently leading a school that exceeded academic growth targets for four consecutive years. Under her leadership, the school raised its performance letter grade and successfully exited low-performing status. In recognition of her exceptional leadership, she was named Wayne County Public Schools' 2024-2025 Principal of the Year.
Ms. Smith is known for her transformational leadership style, using data-driven strategies and a deep commitment to staff and student well-being to foster school-wide success. She believes in creating a positive culture where people choose to stay and grow together.
She and her future husband are currently building a home in Hampstead and are excited to become part of the greater Pender County community.
A message from Ms. Smith:
“I am so thrilled to be joining Pender County and Surf City Elementary as Principal for the 2025-2026 school year. I pride myself on being a transformational leader. The magic in leadership happens when you succeed in making others believe in you and your vision for the school. I can’t wait to share my enthusiasm and leadership with Surf City Elementary, as we work collaboratively to create a safe, respectful environment where our students thrive. One of my greatest accomplishments has been building a school community where educators choose to stay and grow their careers. I look forward to continuing that tradition here in Pender County.”
Please join us in giving Ms. Smith a warm Surf City welcome!
