PURPLE STAR AWARD

RALEIGH, NC - For a fifth-consecutive year, Pender County Schools has been honored with the prestigious Purple Star Award as part of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s (NCDPI) initiative recognizing military-friendly schools. The district is one of 453 schools across the state to receive this recognition for the 2024-25 school year, marking an increase of 59 awardees compared to last year.

The Purple Star Award was introduced in the 2019-20 school year to honor schools that demonstrate a commitment to supporting military families and students. In a ceremony today, schools from across the state were recognized for their dedication to ensuring military families feel supported within the educational environment. Pender County Schools, which has earned the Purple Star distinction, was one of 15 districts statewide to be honored with the State Superintendent’s Purple Star District Award. This award recognizes entire districts where every school meets the criteria for military-friendly practices.

“Pender County Schools has long been dedicated to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all students, including those from military families,” said Dr. Brad Breedlove, Superintendent of Pender County Schools. “This recognition is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff to make sure military families feel welcomed and supported in our schools.”

In addition to the overall district recognition, several Pender County Schools have committed to military-friendly initiatives such as hosting events for military families and providing resources to ease the transition for military students. These initiatives, including professional development for staff and dedicated support for military families, ensure that students can focus on their education while feeling supported during what can be a challenging time for military families.

With a growing number of military-connected students across North Carolina, this recognition highlights the state’s ongoing commitment to honoring those who serve and their families. Pender County Schools joins other districts in celebrating the valuable contributions of military families and reinforcing its dedication to providing a welcoming and supportive environment for all students.
