PENDER COUNTY, N.C. — Pender County Public Schools announces its intention to apply for funding under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Title VI, Part B, for the 2024-2025 academic year. The IDEA mandates that local education agencies (LEAs) collaborate with private school representatives and parents of parentally-placed private school children with disabilities in crafting special education and related services for the upcoming school year.

All private school representatives and parents of homeschooled children are receiving this communication, as homeschools are considered private schools in North Carolina. Furthermore, the Pender County Public Schools are obliged by the IDEA to identify, evaluate, and provide special education services to all children with disabilities attending private schools within the county, with funding allocated proportionally from Title VI, Part B funds.

To meet these requirements, Pender County Public Schools seeks assistance from private school representatives and homeschooling parents. A consultation working group has been scheduled for Tuesday, April 23, at 3:00 p.m. The meeting will take place virtually via the link: meet.google.com/ima-tksk-ffi or by phone at +1 252-379-2232 (PIN: 452 423 444#).

The purpose of the meeting is to gather input and feedback to develop an educational services plan for students with disabilities enrolled in private schools for the 2024-2025 school year. If unable to attend the meeting, interested parties are encouraged to contact Lisa Troy, administrative assistant, at 910-259-2187, ext. 710204, or lisa_troy@pender.k12.nc.us by 5:00 p.m. on Monday, April 22.

Additionally, private school representatives and homeschooling parents are requested to provide student names, parent names, addresses, telephone numbers, and information on disabilities, along with suggestions for special education services by April 22, either during the meeting or via email.

For further information or to participate in the consultation working group, please contact Lisa Troy at the provided phone number or email address.
