ELIZABETH CITY, NC - Six members of the Topsail High School Coast Guard JROTC (CGJROTC) program recently took part in a week-long Junior Leadership Academy (JLA) in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
CGJROTC cadets Dylan Bennett, McKenzie Dendy, Chrisalee Garofolo, Tadhg Leary, Kaitlyn Reinshuittle and Bradyn Tober joined cadets from the Coast Guard's 5 other CGJROTC units for the JLA. A senior cadet-led, instructor-coached program, JLA's are designed to to help cadets develop confidence and knowledge to become effective leaders.
During the JLA cadets participated in activities including physical training, air rifle, military drill, uniform inspections, and sports. Cadets also participated in various team-building activities and participating in the time-honored U.S. Lifesaving Service surf rescue drill at the Chicamacomico Life Saving Station on the Outer Banks.
Several Topsail High School CG JROTC cadets earned top honors during the week. Cadets Bennett and Dendy earned CGJROTC Aptitude Awards as members of the Outstanding Platoon (The Platoon with the highest scores in all events for the week)
while Cadet Garofolo earned the Outstanding Female Support Staff Cadre Trophy.
