Mission Statement: The mission of the North Carolina Migrant Education Program is to help migrant students and youth meet high academic challenges by overcoming the obstacles created by frequent moves, educational disruption, cultural and language differences, and health-related problems.

How Do Students Qualify?

  • Ages 3-21

  • Have not yet received a high school diploma or its equivalent

  • Have moved into a school district within the last 36 months

  • Whose parents, guardians, spouses, or selves have moved due to economic necessity and have worked in agriculture production or fishing within the last 36 months

Pender County Specific

Currently we have 50 in school students and 3 out of school students.

Most of the families here in Pender County have qualified working in agriculture production. The main crops harvested here in Pender County are strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries. Other qualifying temporary work done here in Pender County is packing pine straw bales. Our peak season during the year is April until the end of June.

Support We Provide

  • In school tutoring for students in grades K-13 through migrant tutors and educators

  • Supplemental Services

    • Material support - book bags, school supplies, clothing

    • Referrals - food vouchers, health support

  • Summer Programing

    • K -5 Migrant Summer Program STEAM Focused

    • Instructional referrals to district summer programming

      • Elementary and Middle School Students

      • Credit Recovery or Initial Credit for High School Students
