NAILED IT! - the bands at Surf City Middle, Topsail Middle and Topsail High nailed their performances at Music Performance Adjudication which was held at Havelock HS. Each band received either an excellent or superior rating! Congratulations to all who participated

Congratulations to the 8th grade band! They scored an overall rating of "Excellent" with a rating of "Superior" in sight reading at their Music Performance Adjudication performance yesterday. Hope to see you at their next performance at Topsail High School on May 4th at 6pm!

Nathan Hale, author and cartoonist, will be visiting our school Monday March 21st! His hilarious historical novel series, Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales, are a MUST READ for kids and grown-ups alike! Students who have read at least 1 or 2 of his books will attend his presentation or workshop on Monday. He will sign copies of his books if they bring one in as well. Many thanks to the NC Arts Council and their Grassroots Grant program for making his visit possible.

Happy BookFaceFriday! Brothers with the same book 6 years apart.
Have a great Spring Break, Sharks!

A big congratulations to the boys basketball team after winning the conference championship yesterday! The boys won 46 to 20 and finished the season with a 10 and 2 record, regular season co-champs, and conference tournament champs. Way to go champs!

It was a thrilling 2nd place finish for our Battle of the Books team today, narrowly missing 1st place by one question! They worked hard setting up the gym, played a tough battle, and finished the day with fun in the library. Great job, Sharks!

Lillian Foley has been selected to audition for the NC All-State band. Please join us in wishing her luck this week during auditions! Congrats and good luck!

From Mr. Tayloe...
8th graders set insect traps around campus to catch a glimpse of the smaller organisms that make up the ecosystem at SCMS and feed a lot of the animals we captured on Critter Cam. We left these traps out for a week and yesterday observed what we captured using microscopes.

Mr. Law's class is taking advantage of this beautiful weather and our wonderful new tables!

Thank you so much to everyone for the most amazing Book Fair ever! Not only did students get lots of great books, they also practiced math (What can I buy with $20? How much will tax add to my total?) and social studies (Wait...why do we have tax??) skills. It was a great week!

Don't forget...Tomorrow is the last day of the Book Fair. It will close tomorrow at 1:00. Thanks so much for a great week! Keep reading!

7am on the day off....this is what hard work and dedication look like.
6-0
Keep up the great work, Sharks!

Creating a green screen project is always fun!

We had a FANTASTIC start to our first in-person Book Fair in over 2 years! It will run through Friday 2/18. Thanks so much for your support!

When you're all reading the first page to decide if THIS is your project book.....
And you all decide YES!

Congratulations to Alexa Bradshaw, Lily Cross, Kaylie Hurst, Lilli Foley and Riley Gobble for making it into the NCBA All-District Band! These students have worked very hard and will be performing in the clinic at UNCW on February 19 at 12:30. We are all proud of all the hard work they have accomplished!

Mrs. Hill's 7th Grade Science class wrapped our unit of study on the Body Systems this past week by doing Bullfrog Dissections and making comparisons between their internal and external anatomy and ours. Though frogs are amphibians and we are mammals, we share a number of similarities especially when it comes to our internal anatomy but at the same time some really interesting differences. The students had a great time exploring and learning all about this and did a great job with their first major dissection!

The Book Fair is here, and it will open on Wednesday or Thursday and run through Friday 2/18! Check out our Book Fair web page for information and to set up an eWallet to make shopping easy for your student!
Thanks so much for your support!

Our soccer teams celebrated their championship seasons with a victory lap around the school today! Great job, Sharks!

Week 1 Mr. Tayloe's Critter Cam
We had one of the most productive first weeks in Critter Cams history. Lots of good pictures and a wide variety of Critters. Deer are always the most numerous performers and this week didn’t disappoint. Even caught a glimpse of “Floppy” named for the doe who’s ear folds over. Floppy has been a resident of SCMS for 3 years now and has had 4 offspring in that time (I will add a few of her fawns pictures from 2019 to this). An unusually high number of coyote pictures this week including a couple pictures of 3 traveling together. One single coyote typically eats smaller game (rabbits, rats, mice, birds, cats “their favorite”), but when they start hunting in groups they can take down larger prey like adult deer. The bobcat in years past has been tough to get a picture of, but we managed to get one the first week. Rabbits, song sparrows and an Owl I caught a picture of on my property in November wrap up Critter Cam for the week.

0005 Grey Fox

109 Owl I captured a picture of on my property in Burgaw back in November
