Gionna Lagnese, a fourth grade teacher at Surf City Elementary School, has been selected as the 2026–2027 Dr. Katherine Herring Honored Educator Scholar, a recognition that celebrates outstanding educators in Pender County Schools.

Presented through the Development Foundation of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT), Inc., the scholarship honors the memory and service of Rev. Dr. Katherine Herring. Dr. Herring served for 28 years on the Pender County Board of Education, making her one of the longest-serving elected officials in Pender County and a dedicated advocate for students, schools, and public education.

As this year’s Herring Scholar, Ms. Lagnese will have the opportunity to attend an NCCAT seminar of her choice. The scholarship covers the full cost of participation, including instruction, materials, meals, lodging, travel, and substitute teacher expenses while she attends the program. She will also receive a $250 award to support her classroom.

For Ms. Lagnese, the honor recognizes the care, consistency, and dedication she brings to her students each day. Her work at Surf City Elementary reflects the kind of student-centered teaching that helps young learners grow academically, socially, and personally.

Dr. Breedlove congratulated Ms. Lagnese on the recognition, noting the meaningful connection between Dr. Herring’s legacy of service and Ms. Lagnese’s work in the classroom.

“The legacy of Dr. Katherine Herring and her service to Pender County makes this honor especially meaningful,” Dr. Breedlove shared. “Your experience, success, and support for your students has made you most deserving of this recognition and honor. In addition, your work at Surf City Elementary exemplifies the excellence and dedication we strive for across our district.”

The Dr. Katherine Herring Honored Educator Scholarship continues a tradition of investing in teachers who make a lasting difference in the lives of students. Ms. Lagnese’s selection is a reflection of the positive impact she has made at Surf City Elementary and across the Pender County Schools community.
