Our third grade students have been learning about the life of famous ocean explorer and scientist Jacques Cousteau as they read The Fantastic Undersea Life of Jacques Cousteau. Students have been practicing how to identify and sequence important events in a person’s life while learning about Cousteau’s work exploring the ocean and his efforts to teach others about protecting ocean life.
To put their learning into action, each student was given an important event from Cousteau’s life. They wrote a caption explaining why their event was significant and then created an illustration to go along with it.
Through this activity, students learned how headings, captions, and illustrations can give readers additional information and help them better understand a text. They also got to show their creativity while putting the events of Cousteau’s life in order!
