Our students recently experienced an exciting school assembly featuring the talented breakdancing group Raleigh Rockers, and it was a performance no one will forget! From the moment the music started, the gym was filled with energy, movement, and lots of amazed faces as the dancers showed off incredible spins, freezes, and flips.
The Raleigh Rockers didn’t just perform amazing breakdancing moves. They also helped students learn about the history and culture of hip hop. Students discovered that hip hop includes DJing, MCing (rapping), breakdancing, and graffiti art. The performers explained how hip hop started as a creative way for young people to express themselves through music, dance, and art. The Raleigh Rockers also introduced students to rapping, or MCing. They explained that rapping uses rhythm, rhyme, and creativity to tell stories or share messages. Students practiced clapping along with beats and learned how rhyming words help create flow in a rap.
During the assembly, the dancers demonstrated different breakdancing techniques and explained how much practice, strength, and teamwork it takes to master the moves. Students learned that dancers must build strong muscles, balance, and coordination to safely perform tricks like windmills and head spins. Many students were surprised to learn that breakdancing is now recognized as a competitive sport around the world!
Most importantly, the group encouraged students to remember that hip hop is about creativity, respect, and positive self-expression. Whether through music, dance, art, or writing, everyone can find their own way to share their voice.
Thank you to the Raleigh Rockers for an unforgettable assembly that combined fun, movement, and learning. Our students left inspired and ready to keep the rhythm going!
Who knows? We may have a few future break-dancers or rappers right here at Rocky Point Elementary!
