Music

Step inside the music room and you’ll quickly discover that our Rams learning here is anything but ordinary. Rather than simply sitting and singing, students actively engage with music through movement, creativity, and hands-on exploration. The classroom is filled with energy as students dance, play instruments, and experience music in ways that make learning both meaningful and fun. With a wide variety of instruments available, every visit becomes an opportunity for students to discover new sounds, develop skills, and express themselves.

Third graders spend the year learning to play the ukulele, an experience that allows them to build rhythm, coordination, and confidence as young musicians. Through consistent practice, students develop an understanding of chords, strumming patterns, and musical structure. While ukulele instruction is a special focus for third grade, other students occasionally have opportunities to explore the instrument as well, making it an exciting feature of the music program.

Fourth graders can often be found playing their recorders, where they strengthen their note-reading abilities and performance skills. In addition to class instruction, students are encouraged to challenge themselves by earning Recorder Belts. Modeled after a karate-style system, there are nine colorful belt levels that represent increasing musical mastery. This system promotes goal-setting, perseverance, and a sense of accomplishment as students progress through each level at their own pace.

The music room also supports students’ social-emotional growth. Puppets play an important role in helping students feel safe and comfortable, particularly when asked to sing independently. By shifting the focus away from themselves, students often feel more confident sharing their voices. Beyond building confidence, the puppets bring creativity, humor, and personality into lessons, making musical experiences even more engaging.

As a special treat, preschool students visit the music room to sing songs, learn dances, and play instruments. These visits provide early exposure to musical concepts while creating joyful, memorable experiences. The music room continues to be a place where students not only develop musical skills, but also grow in creativity, confidence, and self-expression.
