EC

Wonderful learning is happening every day in our Exceptional Children (EC) classrooms, and we couldn’t be more proud of both our students and the dedicated teachers who support them. Through hands-on instruction, multisensory strategies, and intentional reading support, our learners are building strong academic foundations and growing in confidence as thinkers and problem-solvers.

In math, students are engaging in a variety of meaningful activities that help them truly understand numbers and how they work. Some of our younger learners are using TouchMath, a multisensory approach that assigns touchpoints to the digits 1 through 9. Students physically touch and count each point, combining visual, tactile, and movement-based learning. This approach strengthens number recognition and helps students solve addition and subtraction problems with greater accuracy.

Students are also exploring measurement and length relationships. Using 10-centimeter sticks and cubes, they first build and represent a length they already know. Then, by thinking about how that known length relates to another length, they add more pieces to determine the unknown measurement. This hands-on process supports problem-solving skills and helps students develop a deeper understanding of how measurements compare and connect.

Another important focus has been counting and ordering numbers from 1 to 20. Students practice saying numbers in sequence and arranging them from smallest to largest. These foundational skills build strong number sense and prepare students for more advanced math concepts in the future.

As students grow, they are also being introduced to multiplication through the area model. This visual strategy uses rectangles to show how multiplication works. Larger numbers are broken into tens and ones, making problems easier to manage while helping students understand place value and what the numbers represent.

Reading is an essential part of each day as well. During their EC services, students participate in reading activities that strengthen language, comprehension, and confidence. Whether listening to a story, reading with support, or reading independently, each moment spent reading helps build critical skills and encourages a lifelong love of learning.

We are so proud of the effort our students show and the thoughtful, engaging instruction our teachers provide. Together, we are building strong skills, confident learners, and a community that values growth and learning every single day.
