Our students had an incredible time diving into their first module of Wit & Wisdom: “How Do Books Change Lives Around the World?” Through engaging stories and hands-on activities, students discovered how books can travel to even the most remote villages and how reading can connect people and communities around the world.
One of the highlights of the module was reading Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. Students learned an important lesson about not judging something before giving it a try. To bring that lesson to life, students put their own courage to the test by trying green Jell-O “eggs”! Their reactions and enthusiasm made this activity a memorable part of our learning.
Students also used their creativity and imagination to write their own narrative stories about how people might receive books in remote places. After writing their stories, students had the opportunity to share their work with a partner and then read aloud to their entire class. These experiences helped students build confidence while demonstrating their understanding of the module's big ideas.
To wrap up our learning, we took a field trip to downtown Burgaw, where students visited the public library, police station, and fire department before heading to the park for lunch and some fun. The field trip also connected beautifully with our Social Studies learning about community helpers and the important roles that police officers, firefighters, librarians, and others play in our communities.
What a wonderful way to bring our learning to life! From exploring the power of books to trying something new, creating imaginative stories, sharing our voices, and learning about the people who serve our community, our students made meaningful connections that extended far beyond the classroom.
