5th Grade

Dear Families,

We are excited to share a snapshot of the meaningful learning happening in our 5th grade classrooms as part of Wit & Wisdom Module 4!

Our students have been exploring the theme of breaking barriers through sports, engaging with powerful texts and real-life stories that highlight perseverance, courage, and social change.

One of the anchor texts, We Are the Ship, has introduced students to the history of the Negro Leagues. Through this work, students have gained insight into the challenges African American baseball players faced during segregation and how their talent and determination helped reshape the sport.

Students have also been learning about the Paralympic Games, discovering how athletes with disabilities compete at elite levels and challenge perceptions about ability. These lessons have sparked thoughtful discussions about inclusion, determination, and redefining limits.

Throughout the module, students are strengthening their skills in reading comprehension, critical thinking, and evidence-based writing. They are analyzing texts, discussing important themes of fairness and equality, and writing about how individuals have made an impact by challenging barriers.

We are proud of the engagement and thoughtful conversations happening in our classrooms. This learning not only builds academic skills but also encourages students to reflect on perseverance, inclusion, and the importance of standing up for what is right.

Our 5th grade students have spent the week wrapping up Eureka Math Module 6, our final math module of the year!

Throughout this module, students have been building a strong understanding of key concepts and applying the skills they have developed all year related to graphing and coordinate planes. They have worked hard to solve complex problems, explain their thinking, and make connections between different mathematical ideas. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they tackle challenging tasks and persevere through problem-solving.

As we finish this final module, students are demonstrating their ability to think critically, use precise mathematical language, and justify their answers. Their progress reflects not only their hard work, but also their commitment to learning and growth throughout the year.

In science, students have also been doing an outstanding job engaging with the content and meaningful discussions. They have shown curiosity, asked thoughtful questions, and worked collaboratively to deepen their understanding of scientific concepts. Whether exploring new topics, conducting experiments, or analyzing results, students have demonstrated strong effort and enthusiasm.

We are incredibly proud of the growth our students have shown  and look forward to finishing the year strong!
