As we complete our final 2 ½ days of school this week, here are some important reminders and updates before we begin our Winter Intercession. Thank you for staying connected and involved.
Personal Message from Dr. Goodlett
As mentioned in last week’s message, over the next few weeks you will receive updates from me as Mr. Harris and his wife prepare for the arrival of their baby girl. Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions, concerns, or support you may need during Mr. Harris’s absence in January.
Winter Break
Winter Break officially begins on December 11th and continues through January 2nd. Please remember that Wednesday, December 10th is an early release day. We look forward to welcoming all our Hornets back on January 5.
Winter II Athlete Parent Meeting – Monday, December 8
Parents of students planning to try out for girls basketball or boys soccer are asked to attend the Winter II Athlete Parent Meeting on Monday, December 8 at 3:30 PM in Mrs. Umphress’ Room 134. If you did not attend a parent meeting earlier this school year, attendance at this meeting is required. Important information about tryouts, eligibility, expectations, and schedules will be provided.

PAC Meeting – Monday, December 8
Our monthly PAC meeting will be held on Monday, December 8 at 5:30 PM. We encourage all families to attend.
8 Days of Holiday Cheer – Spirit Days
We have enjoyed seeing students participate in our holiday spirit days. We encourage everyone to continue joining in this week.
A flyer outlining each theme is included so families can plan ahead and help students participate.
Million Minute Read to Succeed Challenge – Results
Our Million Minute Reading Challenge has concluded, and we are extremely pleased with the minutes students logged. Thank you for supporting reading at home and helping us finish strong. The winning grade level is 3rd grade. They have earned a Pajama and Popsicle Party.
Top individual readers from each grade were announced Friday afternoon and have earned a Pizza Party.
Winter Intersession for All – December 15–18
Winter Intersession for All will take place December 15–18. This new opportunity is available for every K–8 student to participate in additional academic support and enrichment.
All students will receive an invitation to attend.
Families who requested bus transportation will be notified next week with pick-up and drop-off times.
Holidays Around the World and Winter Concert – Thursday, December 9
Join us on Thursday, December 9 from 5:30–7:00 PM for Penderlea’s Holidays Around the World celebration.
This student-led event will highlight traditions, foods, and celebrations from cultures around the globe and will include our Winter Concert. Families are invited to bring a dish that represents their culture or heritage.

Burgaw Christmas Parade – Saturday, December 13
Our band and winter athletes will participate in the Burgaw Christmas Parade.
Meet-up times at Burgaw Middle School:
Band members: 4:30 PM
Athletes: 5:00 PM
Parade begins at 5:30 PM.
Hornet Holiday Store – December 8–9
The Penderlea Beta Club will host the Hornet Holiday Store on December 8 and 9 from 7:30 AM–2:00 PM in Room 211.
Students will have the opportunity to purchase affordable holiday gifts ranging from $1–$5.
