5th grade students have learned about colonization, focusing on the reasons European countries explored and settled in the New World. They explore how explorers and settlers were motivated by the search for wealth, land, and religious freedom. Students also examine the impact of colonization on Indigenous peoples, including changes to their land, culture, and way of life. Through engaging articles and activities, students begin to understand how colonization shaped the early history of what would become the United States, laying the foundation for future lessons on the development of the colonies.
The students are wrapping up Module 1 of Eureka Math, which explores place value concepts for multiplication and division of whole numbers. Throughout this module, the students have been strengthening their place value understanding in base ten, improving their multiplication/division abilities, as well as focusing on their ability to solve multi-step problems. The students are working hard by practicing in their workbooks and engaging in meaningful math discussions.
