Readers, Writers, and Thinkers

The third grade students at Penderlea Elementary School are not just learning to read, they're learning to think, connect and grow thanks to the school's use of wit and wisdom reading curriculum.

Throughout the school year our third graders have explored rich meaningful texts that spark curiosity and deep thinking. They have analyzed the bravery of historical figures and examined how art tells stories. Our students are developing strong reading comprehension skills all while learning to express their ideas clearly and confidently.

Each wit and wisdom module in third grade centers around an essential question and uses diverse high interest texts to build vocabulary, background knowledge and critical thinking. Recent lessons have had students learning about various artists and what inspires them. We have noticed our students are excited to talk about what they have read and go home telling their families all about it.

The third graders are preparing for their first end of grade assessments this week and they carry with them not just test taking strategies but a whole year's worth of meaningful learning experiences which have helped them to become stronger readers, writers and thinkers.
