A recent Summer Meals distribution at Malpass Corner Elementary provided an opportunity for Pender County Schools to welcome representatives from the Carolina Hunger Initiative and highlight the work taking place to serve families throughout the summer
During the visit, representatives observed meal service, met members of the district’s Child Nutrition team and saw firsthand how staff prepare and distribute seven days of breakfast and lunch items for children across Pender County.
Earlier this year, No Kid Hungry awarded Pender County Schools a $10,000 grant this summer to support the district’s ongoing efforts to expand access to nutritious meals.
The district is in the process of using the funding to purchase a refrigerator/freezer trailer. The additional cold-storage and transportation capacity will help Child Nutrition staff safely store and move food as they prepare thousands of meals for distribution each week.
The trailer will also provide greater flexibility as the district continues serving families at multiple locations across a geographically large county.
Pender County Schools appreciates the support of No Kid Hungry and the Carolina Hunger Initiative, along with the work of Child Nutrition employees and community partners who help make the Summer Meals program possible.
