January Pillar of Practice Award

This month, we are proud to recognize Ms. Alexis Christoff as our PCS Pillars of Practice recipient for January. Ms. Christoff is a passionate 6th-grade Social Studies teacher whose heart for students shines through in everything she does. Originally from metro Detroit, Michigan, Ms. Christoff graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 2023 with a degree in Secondary Education, focusing on Social Studies and Political Science. In 2024, she took a brave leap of faith—moving to Wilmington, North Carolina, all on her own (along with her three cats!)—to begin her teaching career and make a difference in the lives of students.

Ms. Christoff chose education because school once served as a safe haven in her own life. Growing up, the classroom was a place where she felt protected, supported, and cared for—thanks to teachers who believed in her when she needed it most. Those experiences shaped her purpose as an educator. For her, teaching is about far more than content; it’s about connection, kindness, and making sure every student feels valued. Her “why” is rooted in love and belonging. While she teaches historical dates and Social Studies concepts, her greatest priority is ensuring her students know they are cared for. Each day, she ends class with a powerful reminder to her students: “Wherever you are, wherever you go, I hope that you grow, and know that you are loved.”

Ms. Christoff knows that for some students, those words may be the reassurance they need to feel safe, seen, and supported—just as she once did. When asked what advice she would give to other beginning teachers, she offers an honest and encouraging message: teaching is hard, but it is worth it. She encourages beginning teachers to focus on the small moments—the conversations, the trust students place in you, and the joy of being someone students feel comfortable confiding in. Those moments, she says, are what make teaching incredibly rewarding. We are grateful for Ms. Christoff’s compassion, courage, and commitment to her students. She embodies the heart of why we do this work, and we are so thankful to have her as part of our school community. 💙
