HAMPSTEAD, N.C. — Todd Hewitt, the STEM and robotics teacher at Topsail Middle School, has been named the 2026 Corning STEM Educator of the Year for the Middle School Division.
Presented by Corning’s Wilmington team, the annual award honors Cape Fear-area educators who make a lasting impact through innovative instruction in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Corning has recognized local STEM educators since 2013.
Hewitt was selected following a competitive application process that included educators from across southeastern North Carolina. The honor recognizes his dedication to student learning and his commitment to providing engaging, hands-on STEM opportunities.
At Topsail Middle, Hewitt helps students explore engineering, robotics, coding and design through project-based learning. His classroom challenges students to think critically, work collaboratively and solve real-world problems while developing technical and employability skills that will support them in school and beyond.
“Mr. Hewitt’s passion for STEM education is evident in everything he does,” said Dominique Bates, director of Career and Technical Education for Pender County Schools. “He challenges students to think beyond the classroom, embrace innovation and believe in their ability to solve complex problems. This honor reflects the positive impact he has on his students, his school and our district. We are incredibly proud of this well-deserved recognition.”
Hewitt was celebrated at UNCW’s Soar into STEM Conference on June 11th and again during a celebration hosted by Corning on Monday, July 20th.
