Pender Early College High School student Nola Nadeau recently attended a prestigious medical conference hosted by Harvard University, where she experienced cutting-edge medical research, connected with world-renowned scientists, and explored future educational opportunities.
One of the conference's most memorable moments was hearing Nobel Prize-winning geneticist Mario Capecchi speak about his groundbreaking work in gene targeting. Capecchi's research revolutionized modern genetics and paved the way for the development of CRISPR gene-editing technology. During the conference, Nadeau had the unique opportunity to meet and speak personally with Capecchi, as well as Heman Bekele, the internationally recognized young scientist and inventor.
Nadeau also observed a live shoulder replacement surgery on a 70-year-old patient suffering from severe arthritis and a damaged rotator cuff. Watching the intricate procedure provided an extraordinary firsthand look at modern medicine and offered an experience that few high school students have the opportunity to witness.
Throughout the conference, Nadeau met with admissions representatives from several colleges and universities, learning more about future educational opportunities and building connections with higher education leaders from across the country.
The conference concluded with an exciting opportunity when the Dean of Admissions at Harvard invited Nadeau to return next year as a conference alumna with a full scholarship, recognizing her engagement and participation throughout the event.
In addition to the conference activities, Nadeau experienced the excitement surrounding the FIFA World Cup festivities taking place in Boston. Among the memorable sights were enthusiastic Scottish fans participating in a lighthearted tradition by placing traffic cones atop statues throughout the city, adding to the vibrant atmosphere enjoyed by visitors from around the world.
