PECHS senior Jonathon Davis

Johnathan Davis, a senior at Pender Early College High School (PECHS), is celebrating an exciting milestone after accepting a full-time position with Corning Inc., following a successful internship and part-time role with the company’s Optical Fiber Plant in Wilmington.

Last summer, Davis participated in a competitive Co-op program through Corning, gaining valuable hands-on experience in industrial, electrical, and mechanical systems. The internship was part of PECHS’s graduation requirement, which ensures all students complete a minimum of 30 hours of real-world career experience.

For Davis, the experience went far beyond just a requirement.

“It was incredible,” Davis shared. “I know that I would not have had this amazing experience without the help of my CFCC instructors and PECHS staff.”

With guidance from instructors at Cape Fear Community College (CFCC), where Davis is completing his associate’s degree in Mechatronics, he applied and was selected for the internship. After completing the summer program, Davis continued working part-time for Corning while finishing his studies. Recognizing his dedication and skills, Corning offered him a full-time position upon graduation.

Mechatronics, a multidisciplinary field combining mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering, is one of several high-demand associate’s degree programs available to PECHS students through CFCC. Thanks to this unique partnership, Davis is graduating not only with his high school diploma, but also a debt-free associate’s degree—and now, a promising career path in his hometown.

“Jonathan is a prime example of how internships can lead to life-changing opportunities,” said Daniel Sidor principal at PECHS. “We are incredibly proud of him and excited for what the future holds.”

With strong community partnerships and career-focused programs, PECHS continues to help students bridge the gap between education and employment—just as Davis has done.
