ROCKY POINT, NC - At Heide Trask High School, innovation is sparking brighter than ever.

Just three months after opening its doors, the new SparkNC Lab at Heide Trask High School is already making waves. As part of the statewide Apple App Showcase, students were challenged to design an app prototype focused on Teen Mental Health, a theme that inspired deep empathy, creativity, and technical skill from participants.

Using Keynote, SparkNC Lab students designed and built interactive app prototypes that demonstrated innovative thinking and compassion. After a school-level competition, one outstanding team advanced to represent Pender County Schools in the semi-final round and now, they’ve been selected as finalists.

Our Heide Trask SparkNC Lab scholars, Harper Trochelman, Luke Germain, and Sergio Carreno Juarez, will travel to Apple’s campus in Cary this December, where they’ll pitch their mental health app to a panel of industry professionals.

“This is such an exciting moment for our students,” said Penny Wolff, PCS SparkNC Lab Leader. “They’ve taken what they’ve learned in this brand-new lab and used it to create something meaningful that could truly make a difference in the lives of their peers.”

Sparking Curiosity, Creativity, and Career Skills

The SparkNC Lab at Heide Trask High School officially opened in August 2025, marking an exciting step forward in preparing PCS students for future careers in technology.

Part of the statewide SparkNC initiative, the program allows students to learn at their own pace in areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, software development, and game design. With access to professional-grade tools and guidance, students are encouraged to explore, experiment, and develop valuable real-world skills.

“This is a place where students can come to do the things they want to do, not just what they have to do,” said Craig Lawson, PCS Director of Digital Learning and Media. “It’s about creating space for exploration, challenge, and growth.”

Superintendent Dr. Brad Breedlove noted that the SparkNC Lab reflects the district’s ongoing commitment to forward-looking education. “The SparkNC Lab is about preparing our students for the jobs of tomorrow,” he said. “We’re proud that Heide Trask High School is leading the way in bringing this innovative opportunity to Pender County.”

A Bright Future Ahead

Although located at Heide Trask, the SparkNC Lab is open to all Pender County Schools students interested in technology and creative problem-solving. Those wishing to participate can connect with their school’s administration or counselor to learn more about how to join.
