PCS Million Minute Reading Challenge
Reading every day is very important for elementary students. When children read daily, they learn new words and understand stories better. Reading also helps students become stronger thinkers and better writers. Just 15–20 minutes of reading each day can make a big difference.
Daily reading practice helps students do better in all school subjects. Good readers understand math problems more easily, follow directions in science, and learn more from social studies. Over time, daily reading builds confidence and helps students succeed year after year throughout their school career, from elementary school to middle school and beyond.
At C.F. Pope Elementary, students are working hard to become strong readers. Our school is proud to be part of the Pender County Schools reading initiative called the Million Minute Challenge. This challenge encourages students to read as much as possible and track their reading minutes. By reading every day and joining the Million Minute Challenge, students help their school, their class, and themselves become better readers.
Currently, we only have a handful of students who have logged any minutes of at-home reading for this challenge. We encourage families to value literacy and set an expectation for students to practice reading nightly. This will help them in their learning and help them work toward their AR Goal as well.
If you need books for your house, please contact Mrs. Borders and she can help ensure that books are available at home for students to fall in love with reading! Mrs. Borders can be reached via email at amy_borders@pender.k12.nc.us
