beginning teacher of the year

There is a new rhythm echoing through the halls of Burgaw Middle School, and it’s being led by a familiar face with a fresh title. The school is proud to announce that Mr. Nolan McDonald, band director and music teacher at BMS, has been officially named Burgaw Middle School’s Beginning Teacher of the Year.

Since stepping onto campus, Mr. McDonald has brought an infectious energy to the music department proving that while he may be new to the official roster, he is a seasoned pro when it comes to inspiring young musicians.

From Pirate Roots to Red Devil Pride

Originally hailing from Rocky Mount, NC, Mr. McDonald stayed true to his Eastern North Carolina roots for his education. He attended East Carolina University, where he honed his craft and graduated in 2025 with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education.

While many beginning teachers are just getting their feet wet, Mr. McDonald arrived with years of on-the-ground experience. Since 2020, he has worked as a freelance teacher and technician for various middle and high school band programs across the region. However, it was in the summer of 2025 that he found his true home as a public school teacher and official band director and music teacher here at Burgaw Middle.

"It’s been an incredible journey starting my professional career here," McDonald shared. "Go Red Devils!"

A Life of Rhythm and Hoops

When he isn't helping students master their scales or perfecting a marching routine, Mr. McDonald is almost certainly doing one of two things: playing music or watching basketball.

He practices what he preaches as a gigging musician on the weekends, keeping his performance skills sharp in the professional circuit. He is also a huge basketball fan, and if you see him in the halls, feel free to talk stats—though he’s already made his stance clear: the OKC Thunder are the best team to ever hit the court.

Looking Ahead

Being named Beginning Teacher of the Year is no small feat. It recognizes not just the technical skill of an educator, but their ability to connect with students and foster a positive learning environment. In just a short time, Mr. McDonald has harmonized perfectly with the Burgaw Middle School community.

Please join us in congratulating Mr. McDonald on this well-deserved honor!
