Across the county all of our Head Start and NC PreK classrooms use Creative Curriculum as our core curriculum. This curriculum has many 3-6 week studies that are of interest to children. All of our classrooms are currently working on "The First Six Weeks" study which introduces children to school, the important people and things in a school, and how to be part of a group of their peers.

The preschool program has been utilizing FUNdations for 3 and a half years. We have seen children's letter knowledge and letter sound naming increase. This year we have adopted Heggerty for Pre-K across the county, after Heggerty was piloted at Cape Fear and Rocky Point Elementary schools in the 2024-2025 school year.

Literacy in early childhood focuses on the things that are important to a young child; such as their name, and the names of other people they love. Each Creative Curriculum study also has focus vocabulary words that teachers introduce throughout the study.

We are happy to see literacy being introduced in fun ways to our new preschool children across the county!
