School History

Pender High School is a public high school located in Burgaw, North Carolina on Highway 53 about 25 miles from Wilmington. Pender High is one of three traditional high schools within the Pender County Schools system. Pender High School celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2015, having served Pender County students since 1975.

Pender High School is a true campus, with 7 buildings holding classes for high school students each day, including a gym with classrooms and a stage, a facility for band, theatre and ROTC, as well as a dedicated facility for CTE courses complete with workshops for Masonry and Carpentry. Pender High School’s campus is also the site for the Head Start program, which has two buildings on the property. This year there are 625 students at the school, 3 administrators, 40 teachers, and 5 certified support staff. There are 6 non-certified support staff members.

The community we serve includes the town of Burgaw and the surrounding rural area which has seen a steady increase in population growth over the past 5 years that is expected to continue in the foreseeable future. The town of Burgaw lies at the intersection of several major routes, including Interstate 40, leading to multiple opportunities for recreation and entertainment. This makes Burgaw and Pender High an excellent choice for families to live, work, and play. Pender High School, with a graduation rate above the state rate, is committed to providing opportunities for students to succeed.
