PRINCIPAL - DR. SONYA OATES

Dr. Sonya Oates

My name is Dr. Sonya Oates and I am in my third year as principal at Cape Fear Elementary School in Pender County.

A native of Wilmington, I served as an assistant principal in New Hanover and Brunswick county at the elementary and middle school level. Prior to becoming an assistant principal, I had many experiences including teacher assistant and teacher. I am always a teacher at heart.  My educational background includes a bachelor's degree from North Carolina Central University, teacher certification from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, a master's degree from Gardner-Webb University and a Doctorate in Administration from High Point University. My modeling of pursuing lifelong learning is intended to be an example to students and teachers that we never stop learning.

I am the proud wife and mother of three children. During my free time, I love to read, sing, and spend time with family.

I believe in leading through knowledge, serving through best practices, and collaborating with all stakeholders in order to support the goals of our school system. I view a collaborative school environment as the key to creating successful teachers and students. I also believe that partnerships with parents and community partners are essential to enriching the educational experience.
